First, I’m reading Beast (Avon Romantic Treasure)by Judith Ivory on my Kindle. It’s contrived enough to be annoying as all heck to me, but I’m interested enough to finish, so I guess that’s saying something. I do find the descriptions of the Edwardian time period and crossing the Atlantic on a luxury ocean liner, plus the descriptions of life in France, worth the ride.

In print, I’m reading an old book off my shelves, something I never read before and once started, I am so sucked in. If you live in Dallas, you really need to read this book, The Accommodation: The Politics of Race in an American City. It explores why, when the rest of the nation was erupting with civil rights violence, Dallas didn’t. At least that’s what it’s supposed to be about. I haven’t gotten that far in it. I’m still in 1951, having just begun, but boy, the things I didn’t know about Dallas. (Heart of the KKK in the Southwest? Firebombings?) This is the second book I’ve bought on Dallas history when I ran across it at an estate sale that ended up being valuable in both senses of the word. (Used copies of The Accommodation appear to start at $66. Wow.)

• What did you recently finish reading?

 

Garden books. Lots of garden books. The newest one is Howard Garrett’s Texas Bug Book: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

Sunday I mentioned Monsanto University Texas A&M’s connection to Satan Monsanto.  Someday I may get into all the things that make Monsanto evil but today is not the day.  All I can say at this point is that it is sheer coincidence that this book by premier organic gardening activist, the Dirt Doctor, Howard Garrett, is published by The University of Texas Press. Honestly, I had no idea until the book landed in my mailbox.

But I will never pass up an opportunity to say, “Hook ’em, baby!”

 

• What do you think you’ll read next?

I  still haven’t read the books below, even though they’re been books I’ve really wanted to read for quite awhile now, so I will probably choose one of them. e  and I will probably make it next.

BREAKING NEWS! LIBRARY ALERT!

The library just notified me that a book I was waiting for is now available for my Kindle, so my next read is officially:

A Discovery of Witches, by Deborah Harkness.
