Any MS Word gurus around?

So I admired this cool and mundane little index card and was told they are easy to design, etc.

Well, no, I’d have to actually learn something to do that.

However, I did design a very basic “project” card for myself, and I like it a lot.

The thing is, I use it vertically (the better for lists and scratching out, thereof) but will file horizontally.

So right now, I’m running it through the printer twice. Once, vertically for the form itself.

Second, horizontally-aligned with a title across the top (which is actually down the side when card is in use).

Is there a way in Word to set this up so that it all prints at once? Or will word not let you design your type to go in two directions at once?

If that makes no sense, I’ll be glad to email the templates to anybody who wants to look and see what I’m talking about.

Oh!

Here it is:

And here it is, filed:

filed

I don’t mind running it through twice, but it would be very nice if I didn’t have to.

Any suggestions?

  1. This is very quick and dirty and may leave out some important information, but here goes:

    1. Add another column to the right side of your table.

    2. Merge all the cells in this column so that you have one cell.

    3. Type the text that you want to use.

    4. Right-click on the cell (may need to highlight it first) and select Text Direction from the menu.

    5. Select the orientation that you want.

    6. Change the formatting of the cell to remove whatever borders you don’t want, and no one will know that your line is part of a table.

Let me know if you have further questions and I can help you troubleshoot.

  2. Its really simple. Since u would be filing, u could do it with a bit more style. Try using WordArt.

Use the wordArt Icon or Menu “Insert -> Picture -> WordArt” then u could use the WordArt Vertical Text to achieve the same.

  3. no clue. looks cute though. what do you use the index cards for?

  4. Wow, y’all are terrific. I’m going to learn how to do all these things. See, that’s what comes from being a writer. I only use Word to do writerly things and never bothered to learn any of the other stuff. Plus a kind soul send me an excel doc set up to do this, too.

lavender dawn, I’ll explain the cards in a separate post!

  5. It’s de-lurk week, so I am commenting on all the blogs I read. -even if I don’t know how to help you out.
I am interested to learn more about your index card system!

  6. Nice blog I will recommend you to all my friends. Thank you.

  7. i’ve tikered a lot with excel, and i finally made it to work on a simple 2-column grid for next actions (i mean, title and checkmark). so well done!

Hit me with it.
