What’s your helmet?

Several people have mentioned the importance of getting a good helmet.

So.

What should I look for?

Yes, I bought a blue Giro Indicator:

But that was just because the salesguy recommended it.

I realize that my main concern is safety, so that’s fine. Beyond that, it’s ventilation because even wearing a baseball cap in the summer makes me miserable. I found a review of the Indicator.

And it mentions others having better ventilation.

So, I haven’t even taken it out of the box and don’t mind exchanging it — in fact, we even discussed that possibility at the time.

Any recommendations? Cautions? Rants or raves, cheers or jeers?

I’d like to have the helmet ready to go when the bike arrives!

ETA: I found this page that discusses the Consumer Reports article on bicycle helmets, June 2006. Which means it should be on the newstands now, as well.

Is there a regulating/standards body in the U.S.? In Canada we have the CSA (Canadian Standards Association), but last year I found out they set the standard only for ice hockey helmets (go figure) so anyone buying any other kind of helmet…um…has to test it for herself. (There’s a short screenplay in there.)

It’s been some time since I looked into helmets in any depth, but I believe that there are two standards in the US for bicycle helmets: ANSI and Snell. If I recall correctly, the Snell standard was the more rigorous of the two, and (for those of us who like to keep our brain pans intact) therefore the more desirable. Things might have changed a bit since then, though.

Thanks — that gives me something to go on.
